STOP CONSUMING TIMBER THAT HAS BEEN ILLEGALLY LOGGED.

This means avoiding all tropical hardwoods. Not just from Papua New Guinea, but also Indonesia and the Solomon Islands. Over 50% of all MERBAU (kwila) harvested in PNG is eventually shipped to Australia, mainly as outdoor furniture or decking. Kwila is listed  as an endangered species, categorised as “facing a high risk of extinction in the wild in the near future.”

TELL GOVERNMENTS TO BAN THE IMPORT OF ILLEGAL TIMBER

Greenpeace reports that Australia imports $840 million of illegal timber each year, mostly from Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. CLICK HERE to support the Labor Government’s 2007 and 2010 promises to “ban the import of illegally logged timber”.
